Dear patients, 🩸❤️
The 14th of June is World Blood Donor Day – a good moment to remember something that isn’t a given at all: blood cannot be produced artificially. It can only be passed on from one person to another.
In Austria, a unit of blood is needed every 90 seconds – during operations, after accidents, in cancer treatment. A single whole-blood donation is separated into several products and so often helps several people at once.
You may donate if you are healthy, between 18 and 70 years old and weigh at least 50 kg (first donation up to 60). Men may donate up to 4 times a year, women as well as intersex and non-binary people up to 3 times – with at least 8 weeks in between. The donation itself takes only around 30–45 minutes.
A little piece of Austrian medical history on the side: blood groups were discovered in 1901 by the pathologist Karl Landsteiner – in 1930 he received the Nobel Prize for it.
You’ll find appointments and all the details at your nearest Red Cross blood donation service. Perhaps you too will become a lifesaver. 💚
